The age bracket for motherhood seems to be getting younger and younger as the days go on. Marissa Thomas, a 20-year-old expecting mother, is in her third trimester, which means she is in her ninth month of pregnancy. Her small bundle of joys is due in the month of April.

Cheree Corley, now 21-years-old, is the mother of a two-year-old baby girl. Corley was only 19, when she went through some of the similar situations that Thomas is experiencing now.

To most people, birth is a beautiful thing; Thomas and Corley both experienced a great deal of strife from their parental guardians upon finding out about their pregnancy.

During an interview, Thomas and Corley shared what its like to be young and not only expecting, but what motherhood at a young age is really like:

CC: What advice could you give other young mothers or mothers-to-be?

Corley: I would tell young mothers or mothers-to-be to stay encouraged because sometimes it may feel like everyone is against you. I would also tell them if you handle your business like mature adult things will go smoothly.

Thomas: It’s a lot easier to get thru this whole thing when you have a supporting mate. I can honestly say that I wouldn’t have stayed as sane if it wasn’t for my husband being always by my side. Also, just take it easy and take each day as it comes. Don’t let anyone put you down, because I’ve worked and went to school throughout my whole pregnancy.

CC: How did your parents react when they found out about your pregnancy? Has your relationship with them changed; if so was it for the better or the worse?

Corley: Well my father was very upset and disappointed most of all. My relationship changed with my father after I had my baby and I believe it actually got better!

Thomas: My mom was excited about the whole thing, but my dad flipped out and basically abandoned me. No one understood why he did that because it wasn’t like I did something wrong. I was married and living on my own. However, my dad has accepted it now and is back around again so I guess it changed for the better.

CC: What is it like being a young mother?

Corley: Being a young mother put a lot of things on hold. A lot of my friends will be graduating college soon and for me I will just be entering college.

CC: How does pregnancy feel?

Corley: Being pregnant is the oddest feeling I have ever experienced. Nothing about your body feels the same after you have been pregnant.

Thomas: The first three months I was always sick and throwing up. Months four through six were the easiest. You have energy, you begin feeling movement from the baby, and you’re just happy. The seventh month and so forth just go down hill from there. The backaches get worse with each day and you have to pee all night long. Those little cute kicks you once felt before are more like jabs that really hurt. And the ninth month is the worst of them all because by now you are tired of being pregnant. You can’t sleep, and you want to slap the next person that asks you, “You’re still pregnant?”

CC: What’s the worst part of pregnancy?

Corley: For me it was trying to sleep and vomiting.

Thomas: The beginning is bad if you get morning sickness. The last few months are bad as well because your body aches and you’re just tired of being pregnant.

CC: Did you ask to know your baby’s gender? Why or why not?

Corley: I actually did ask, but my baby’s legs were closed. I asked because I didn’t want to wonder throughout my pregnancy whether or not it was a boy or girl.

Thomas: Yes we did want to know what it was going to be because we wanted to pick out a name and a theme for the nursery.

CC: How did you prepare for the baby?

Corley: I prepared by reading a lot! I read about programs for young mothers, as well as books about things you need to know to raise your child.

Thomas: Mostly by reading books and talking with new mothers.

CC: What was it like finding out that you were pregnant?

Corley: It was very shocking and frustrating. I was kind of scared.

Thomas: It was very exciting, almost unreal when I saw a plus sign on the stick. I just kept laughing.
